‘The Darkest Minds’ Trailer: Teens Get Superpowers And Revolt Against Parents In New YA Film

Image
In a world that hates and fears them, a group of teens with superpowers fights for freedom. Yes, this is the basic premise of “X-Men,” but also apparently, the premise for the upcoming film, “The Darkest Minds.” It’s like “X-Men” but with a heaping helping of “The Hunger Games.” Just when you think the YA movie trend had come to a close, with “Divergent” never finishing its film series and “Maze Runner” stumbling to the end, it looks like there’s another teen franchise hoping to take off. In the first trailer for “The Darkest Minds,” we see what happens when kids suddenly get superpowers. Namely, the adults get freaked out and start imprisoning them. But let’s be honest, did you really expect the trailer for a YA film to focus on the plot only? No, no, no. We get the hint of a young romance, a young female rallying a large group of prisoners, and enough half-baked special effects to just give you the hint of superpowers, all while an unknown song by some pop singer plays in the bac...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 Trailer: Freedom Burns

Image
“The Handmaid’s Tale” quickly became a phenomenon when it was released last year. Hulu, who has quietly been releasing quality original series, had been waiting for something on their streaming service to catch on, and become a massive pop culture hit, in the same way “Stranger Things” has for Netflix and “Transparent” did for Amazon. And clearly, ‘Handmaid’s’ is that hit. With multiple Emmy’s and Golden Globes, the series is poised to become even bigger in season 2. In the newest trailer for the upcoming season, it looks like the series isn’t going to miss a beat when it returns. The upcoming season is especially exciting for one big reason – the unknown. After season 1 ended in much the same way the classic Margaret Atwood novel came to a close, this season is venturing into largely unknown territory. Without the help of amazing source material, will the creators behind the show falter? It sure doesn’t look like it. Elisabeth Moss leads the way in the trailer, as her character i...

‘Kodachrome’ Trailer: Jason Sudeikis, Elizabeth Olsen & Ed Harris Hit The Road

Image
Kodak's Kodachrome shading film was around for quite a while. Truth be told, it even enlivened a Paul Simon melody in 1973. It's nothing unexpected assembling was suspended in 2010, given all the innovative headways that happened in the mid 21st century. That, in any case, the simple/advanced break of old and new, doesn't appear to stop the characters of the up and coming film "Kodachrome." Kodachrome debuted at 2017's Toronto Film Festival to generally lukewarm audits. The Playlist applauded veteran on-screen character Ed Harris' execution calling it a "gaudy, landscape biting part and earns some merited giggles." The official abstract can be perused beneath: Battling A&R official Matt (Jason Sudeikis) discovers his reality flipped around when his irritated father's medical caretaker (Elizabeth Olsen) shows up out of the blue in his office. Matt's dad, a renowned worldwide awful kid photojournalist (Ed Harris), is confronting...

The House With A Clock In Its Walls’ Trailer: Cate Blanchett and Eli Roth, An Unlikely Duo

Image
The curveball, however, comes with one of the film’s stars,  Cate Blanchett . Blanchett has been a household name for many years, thanks to her diverse theatre and film career. She has earned critical and international acclaim working with people such as  Martin Scorsese ,  David Fincher ,  Joe Wright ,  Alejandro González Iñárritu , and  Steven Spielberg , and has brought home three  BAFTA awards, three  Golden Globes , and two  Academy Awards . So, what is she doing teaming up with Eli Roth? Did she lose a bet? During the “ Thor: Ragnarok ” panel at  San Diego Comic-Con  in 2017, Blanchett revealed that it was because of inspiration from her kids that she portrayed the villain Hela in the  Marvel  film. Could her involvement in ‘The House With A Clock In Its Walls,’ also be due to influence by her kids? It worked for ‘Ragnarok,’ but that was with the support of producer-extraordinaire Kevin Feige and director ...

Cannes Artistic Director Explains Why Netflix Films Are Banned From Competition

Image
It didn’t take much time for  Bong Joon Ho ‘s, “ Okja ” to create a stir last May at the  2017  Cannes Film Festival . Not because of the film itself; b ooing began the moment the  Netflix  logo appeared on the screen.  Noah  Baumbach ‘s  Netflix -produced, “ The Meyerowitz Stories ” premiered two days later, and the jeers immediately rang out too. The backlash from French audiences stems from Netflix’s refusal to play by the rules of the French film industry rules, which says that every movie playing competition at Cannes has to be released theatrically. Of course, barring a few exceptions, Netflix doesn’t release its films in movie theaters. It’s an issue that has caused so much controversy in France’s cinema-passionate movie industry, that Cannes  decided to ban any films that won’t play theatrically  in the country – effectively preventing Netflix pictures to appear at the festival. Cannes artistic director  Thierry Fremau...

‘Impulse’ Trailer: Director Doug Liman Returns To The ‘Jumper’ Franchise For New Sequel Series

Image
Odds are, you’ve probably already forgotten about director Doug Liman’s 2008 action film, “Jumper.” While the film wasn’t a massive bomb at the box office, it failed to reach the exact numbers that the studio was hoping for to greenlight a sequel. Now, 10 years later, the “Jumper” franchise is back, but it only has a few things in common with the original film. YouTube has just released the first teaser for their “Jumper” spin-off series, “Impulse.” In the series, we follow a 16-year-old girl, played by Maddie Hasson, that feels like an outcast in her town. Things get complicated when she realizes she has the ability to teleport. The footage shown in the teaser is much more about setting the tone of the series, which seems to be a darker and more grounded take than the globe-hopping, popcorn 2008 film. One thing you’ll notice right off the bat is the distinct lack of actors Hayden Christensen or Rachel Bilson in the series. There are definitely going to be links to that original fi...

‘Superfly’ Trailer: Blaxsploitation Film Get’s A 2018 Makeover In A Brand New City

Image
Many of today’s most singular auteurs (like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Jonathan Glazer, Antoine Fuqua, and Michel Gondry) fine-tuned their style by starting in the music video world before making a switch over to the film world. Now, prolific music video director Director X is joining the ranks with the remake of the 1972 blaxploitation film “Superfly.” In the new teaser for the film, we can definitely see that this is a true reimagining of the original. While the style is clearly updated, the setting has changed, moving to Atlanta from Harlem. Also, it looks like the story is being set up as a riff on films like “Scarface,” focusing on the struggles and violence that comes along with growing your drug business into an empire. X spoke to Deadline about remaking the film saying, “’Superfly’ is about pulling off the ultimate hustle to get out of the game. Our goal is to make it modern – to make a movie where the style, the art direction, the camera movements are all part of what mak...

‘Ready Player One’ Crew Sneaks Steven Spielberg Easter Eggs Into Film Against The Director’s Wishes

Image
The upcoming “Ready Player One” looks to break the imaginary record for most Easter Eggs hidden in a film. With everything from “Back to the Future” to “The Iron Giant” being referenced overtly in the film, director Steven Spielberg has gone on record saying that there are even more references to pop culture hidden throughout the film. However, he also had a rule going into the film—none of Spielberg’s own films were to be included. Apparently, his crew didn’t like that mandate. According to a report by Entertainment Weekly, the crew behind “Ready Player One” did everything in their power to sneak Spielberg film references into scenes. From hidden “Gremlins” grafitti to copies of “Schindler’s List” novels in the background, the crew’s goal was to see how many of these Easter Eggs snuck by the watchful eye of Spielberg. And they weren’t always successful, either. “We had a sly Fratelli’s Diner, but we got caught,” production designer Adam Stockhausen says. “He nixed it.” This is, ...

‘The Rain’ Teaser: Stay Dry, Stay Alive In This Danish Post-Apocalyptic Series

Image
“The Rain” is an upcoming Netflix original series about a group of kids facing the post-apocalypse in Denmark. From the looks of its trailer, it’s part “Walking Dead,” part “Stranger Things,” and part any given CW show. Here’s the official synopsis from Netflix: The world as we know it has ended. In Netflix’s post-apocalyptic YA thriller, two Danish siblings emerge from the safety of their bunker six years after a brutal virus carried by the rain wipes out almost all humans in Scandinavia. After realizing all remnants of civilization are gone, they join a group of young survivors and together set out on a danger-filled quest through an abandoned Scandinavia, searching for any signs of life. Set free from their collective past and societal rules, the group has the freedom to be who they want to be. In their struggle for survival, they discover that even in a post-apocalyptic world there’s still love, jealousy, and many of the coming of age dilemmas they thought they’d left behind wi...

‘Deadpool 2’ Trailer: The Merc With A Mouth Officially Introduces X-Force

Image
“Deadpool 2,” the sequel to the massively successful 2016 superhero action-comedy, comes with its share of behind-the-scenes drama. It started when Tim Miller, director of the original, stepped down from the project citing a classic case of “mutual creative differences.” Apparently, the conflict was between Miller and actor/producer Ryan Reynolds. According to reports, Miller “wanted more of a stylized sequel, while the actor placed his focus more on the raunchy comedy style that earned the first movie its R rating.” Next, following the now-standard progression of production woes for a franchise film, reports of reshoots surfaced. Fans and media pundits wondered: Was “Deadpool 2” in trouble? As we covered yesterday, probably not. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reshoots were simply to add a secret cameo, and excellent test screening scores are outperforming those of the original. If you loved “Deadpool,” it stands to reason you’ll be an even bigger fan of “Deadpool 2.” And...

A ‘Modern Family’ Director Is Apparently The Best Choice To Helm A Courtroom Drama Based On Infamous Hulk Hogan/Gawker Case

Image
The director of sitcoms like “ Modern   Family ” and “ Life   in   Pieces ” has just signed on to direct the exact kind of film you’d expect – a gritty courtroom drama. Variety has just  reported  that  Jason Winer , who has directed episodes of the massive sitcom “Modern Family,” is set to helm a courtroom drama based on the infamous Gawker/Hulk Hogan case. And who better to create a film about a very intricate court case than a director known for showing just how silly the family dynamic truly can be? We’re just as confused. The film, titled “ Thiel v. Gakwer ,” examines the controversial court case between  Terry   Bollea , aka the legendary professional wrestler Hulk Hogan, and  Gawker , the former gossip/news outlet. The court case originated because Gawker ran an article that shared a sex tape featuring the wrestler, without the permission of Hogan. Hulk Hogan then sued Gawker for $100 million, but ended up receiving $115 mill...

Margot Robbie Is Mad as a Hatter in the First ‘Terminal’ Teaser Trailer

Image
Margot Robbie has wasted no time taking control of her career. After her splashy breakout role in The Wolf of Wall Street, the Australian actress was quick to line up a franchise role in Suicide Squad and establish her own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, to take creative matters into her own hands. Her first self-produced film out of the gate was last year’s critical hit I, Tonya, which earned Robbie a Best Actress nomination at the Ocsars and a Best Supporting Actress win for Allison Janney. Now, we’ve got our first teaser for Robbie’s sophomore producing effort, the stylish noir thriller Terminal. The film marks the feature directorial debut of assistant director Vaughn Stein (Beauty and the Beast), who also wrote the script, and follows a twisting tale of two assassins (played by Dexter Fletcher and Max Irons) on a dangerous mission for a mysterious employer. Their journey brings them across a number of colorful characters including an enigmatic janitor and a myster...

Marion Cotillard And Charlotte Gainsbourg Elevate ‘Ismael’s Ghosts’

Image
Toward the end of  Arnaud Desplechin ’s “ Ismael’s Ghosts ,” an actress character declares that a film director is “all over the film,” and that certainly seems to be the case for Desplechin himself. The personal nature of “Ismael’s Ghosts” is tangible in every frame: Ismael, the film’s protagonist played by  Mathieu Amalric , shares Desplechin’s obsessions with death, women, and obsession itself. And like Desplechin, Ismael is a filmmaker. “Ismael’s Ghosts” opens with a brief snippet of Ismaël’s latest film, a political thriller starring  Louis Garrel  as a mysterious French diplomat. While this sort of thing is outside Desplechin’s arty-French wheelhouse, he crafts a believably pulse-pounding film-within-a-film, establishing Ismaël as a director with actual talent. It’s essential that the audience believes in Ismaël’s filmmaking skill, given that he becomes increasingly insufferable as the film progresses. In Desplechin’s film (as well as in real life), actu...

‘Dragon Ball Super’ Reveals Its First Movie Trailer and It’s Glorious

Image
Dragon Ball Super comes to a close this weekend with the highly anticipated Episode 131, a conclusion to the Universe Survival Saga, the Tournament of Power, and likely the series overall. But that doesn’t mean the story stops there. While we don’t know what fate will befall Goku and his friends and family in Universe 7, we do know that the 20th movie in Akira Toriyama‘s franchise will arrive later this year and will continue Goku’s story–or tell a part of it, at least–as confirmed in the film’s first trailer. Dubbed simply Dragon Ball Super, the movie will continue after the events of of the currently running anime and will delve into previously unexplored and unexplained aspects related to Frieza and the Saiyans. Fans think, perhaps rightly so, that we’ll be headed to Sadala, the native planet of the powerful race. While the planet was destroyed by the Saiyans themselves in Universe 7, it still exists in Universe 6 … or at least it did until the universe’s fighting team lost out i...

‘Duck Butter’ Trailer: Love Is Messy In New Film From Director Miguel Arteta And Alia Shawkat

Image
What is a pretty strange title for a film actually makes sense when you hear the co-writer and director  Miguel   Arteta  explain it, in a recent Entertainment Weekly  interview , “Love is a mess. Love is messy: duck butter!” As you’re probably already aware, since you Googled the term earlier, “Duck Butter” is a perfectly appropriate title for a film about a, um, messy relationship. In the first trailer for the film, we are introduced to two women, who after they meet at a concert, decide to spend a 24-hour period together, having sex at least once an hour. In that time, they try to fast-forward through a relationship, doing in one day what most people experience over weeks or months. As you might imagine, the result isn’t what they might have expected. “Duck Butter” is co-written by its star,  Alia   Shawkat , and produced by  The Duplass Brothers . The film also stars  Laia   Costa ,  Mae   Whitman ,  Hong   Chau...

‘Action Point’ Trailer: Jackass Johnny Knoxville Runs The Most Dangerous Water Park

Image
Johnny Knoxville’s upcoming film “Action Point” seems like the film Johnny Knoxville has been waiting his entire life to make. The film is inspired by what was once New Jersey’s most dangerous water park (it had a waterslide that went in a complete loop) and Knoxville is definitely excited about it. “It was like as if us, instead of doing ‘Jackass,’ decided to open a theme park. It has that same spirit like all the safety was left up to the people who walked in.” However, the making of this was not all fun and games for Knoxville. While on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, he mentioned that there’s a stunt that caused his eye to pop out TWICE. Based on the full synopsis and trailer, it seems like “Action Point” will be another hybrid-type movie with actual stunts performed along with a scripted storyline. Like actual Academy Award nominee “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.” Everyone’s favorite daredevil Johnny Knoxville is back to his hilariously painful antics in the upcoming comedy “Action Poin...

‘Come Sunday’ Trailer: Netflix Shares First Footage From Sundance Darling Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor

Image
The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a Pentecostal bishop that is on the verge of losing his congregation. All this after the bishop says he heard a voice, believed to be from God himself, that told him that everyone is already saved and there’s no need to fear damnation. Yes, this premise is a far cry from something like “Bright” or “The Cloverfield Paradox,” but shows Netflix’s own hope to diversify their film lineup. Directed by Joshua Marston, best known for “Maria Full of Grace,” and written by Marcus Hinchey, from “All Good Things,” “Come Sunday” isn’t your typical faith-based film. In fact, while it definitely looks uplifting and inspirational, the film’s subject matter also lends itself to an exploration of religion itself. Regardless of the premise, which seems interesting enough all on its own, the cast alone is worth the price of your monthly Netflix fee. Jason Segel, Martin Sheen, Danny Glover, Lakeith Stanfield, and Condola Rashad star alongside Ejiofor. “Come Sunday” ha...

‘The Spy Who Dumped Me’ Trailer: Kate McKinnon & Mila Kunis Are Strangers On A Mission

Image
The early buzz for “ The Spy Who Dumped Me ” is surprisingly strong – according to  Deadline , the action-comedy even had its release date shifted after a “phenomenal test screening.” Could this finally be  Kate McKinnon ’s breakthrough film? Even if you’re a fan of the “ Ghostbusters ” reboot, it’s hard to argue that the “ Saturday Night Live”  MVP has yet to have her own “ 48 Hrs. ” or “ Bridesmaids .” “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” which McKinnon stars alongside  Mila Kunis , is reminiscent of several other recent comedic espionage movies. The premise, as well as a title that riffs on a James Bond entry which  Mike Myers  already parodied years ago, isn’t particularly inspired. But, there’s reason to hope that “The Spy Who Dumped Me” can transcend a well-worn set-up. Director/co-writer  Susanna Fogel  made her film directorial debut with another comedy about BFFs, 2014’s “ Life Partners ” starring  Leighton Meester  and  Gillian...

‘Under The Silver Lake’ Trailer: Andrew Garfield Plays Detective In Neo-Noir Thriller From The Director Of ‘It Follows’

Image
From the dazzling imagination that brought you It Follows comes a delirious neonoir fever dream about one man’s search for the truth behind the mysterious crimes, murders and disappearances in his East L.A. neighborhood. Sam (Andrew Garfield) is a disenchanted 33-year-old who discovers a mysterious woman, Sarah (Riley Keough), frolicking in his apartment’s swimming pool. When she vanishes, Sam embarks on a surreal quest across Los Angeles to decode the secret behind her disappearance, leading him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal and conspiracy in the City of Angels. From writer-director David Robert Mitchell comes a sprawling, playful and unexpected mystery-comedy detective thriller about the Dream Factory and its denizens — dog killers, aspiring actors, glitter-pop groups, nightlife personalities, It girls, memorabilia hoarders, masked seductresses, homeless gurus, reclusive songwriters, sex workers, wealthy socialites, topless neighbors, and the shadowy billionaires f...

New Insane Episodes of ‘FLCL’ Teased in First Trailer from Adult Swim

Image
Hold onto your hormones, there are all-new episodes of FLCL on the way and I don’t think the world is ready for them. Back in 2000, the six-episode first (and only) season of FLCL introduced audiences to a guitar-swinging heroine battling against a massively powerful industrial corporation and the 12-year-old boy caught in the middle. Part coming-of-age story, part off-the-wall anime sensation, FLCL was as difficult to wrap your head around was it was to pronounce. Now, 12 new episodes, over the course of two new seasons, are on the way, and the first trailer from Adult Swim suggests we’re in for more of the same insanity. More than 15 years since its original launch in Japan, Adult Swim and Production IG will premiere two new seasons of one of the most insane anime ever created, FLCL, starting on Saturday, June 2nd at 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT). Debuting on Adult Swim’s popular anime block Toonami, the new seasons bring together members of the original animation team with a whole new gener...

‘Adventure Time’ Series Finale Trailer Teases All-Out War

Image
We still don’t have a release date for the “ultimate adventure” that will bring Pendleton Ward‘s epic saga to a close, but this trailer does tease a few things: There’s all-out war in the making, as told both by BMO and the events unfolding on-screen, and we’ll see the return of quite a few fan-favorite characters. No worries if you’re not caught up on all the recent events since Cartoon Network and their app have the latest episodes available, including “Blenanas”, “Jake the Starchild”, “Temple of Mars” and “Gumbaldia.” We’ll be sure to let you know when the end is coming … as soon as we know it ourselves! Prepare yourself and watch the final trailer for the series finale of Adventure Time below:

‘Nightflyers’ Teaser Reveals Syfy’s George R.R. Martin Horror Series

Image
Syfy has revealed a first look at the highly anticipated new series Nightflyers, which is basically a horror story set in space. The show is based on a 1980 novella written by Game of Thrones scribe George R.R. Martin and follows eight scientists and a telepath who embark on a mission to the edge of the solar system in the hope of making contact with alien life. Terrifying and violent events begin to take place, testing the loyalties and mental fortitude of those aboard the titular ship. This teaser shows off the first footage from the series, as well as the massive sets. Martin himself appears in the piece, describing Nightflyers as “a haunted house story on a starship” and “Psycho in space.” That right there should be reason enough to tune in, but the production value of the show looks terrific as well. Former Dexter showrunner and Constantine co-creator Daniel Cerone serves as showrunner on the series, and it marks another step in an exciting direction for Syfy’s rebranding. The...

‘The Devil And Father Amorth’ Trailer: William Friedkin Revisits ‘The Exorcist’

Image
It’s interesting that Friedkin is revisiting exorcisms so late in his career, as he has spent a lot of the intervening years trying, and mostly succeeding, to carve out a filmography not just defined by that famous film. Yet, Friedkin has often admitted to the draw of spirituality throughout his work. “The Devil and Father Amorth” will mark the first full-length documentary Friedkin has ever made and looks to be quite a frightening spiritual-sequel (to use a somewhat terrible pun) to “The Exorcist.” His obsession with Father Amorth has been quite a few years in the making, in fact, as this fascinating Vanity Fair story penned by Friedkin explains how the project came into being. The short documentary (it only runs 68 minutes) will be released by The Orchard on April 20th in NY and LA. Let us know what you think of the trailer below.

‘Tag’ Trailer: Ed Helms And Jon Hamm Can’t Touch Jeremy Renner

Image
With new movie adaptations of “Tomb Raider” and “Rampage” both on the horizon, it seems appropriate that Warner Bros. Pictures is also coming out with a film inspired by that game we used to play whenever our parents told us to quit staring at that damn screen and go play outside for a while. The big screen feature debut of director Jeff Tomsic (whose TV credits include “Broad City” and “This Is Not Happening”), “Tag” is loosely based on a true story published in the Wall Street Journal about a group of men from Spokane, Washington, who have managed to keep a high school game of tag going for the last three decades. What started as a schoolyard game for the ten ‘Tag Brothers’ has evolved into a yearly cross-country battle of wits. Reported incidents include one of the men breaking into his former classmate’s house to tag him in the middle of the night and another pursuing his friend all the way to Germany. Here’s the official synopsis for the upcoming comedy:

New ‘Sicario 2: Day Of The Soldado’ Trailer: Benicio Del Toro Starts A War

Image
Right before he became the internet’s go-to director for thought-provoking science fiction with films like “Arrival“and “Blade Runner 2049,” Denis Villeneuve delivered the critically acclaimed crime thriller “Sicario.” That film starred Emily Blunt as an FBI agent who gets embroiled in the U.S./Mexico drug war. It also marked the first entry in screenwriter Taylor Sheridan’s unofficial trilogy exploring the moral complexity of American law enforcement, followed by “Hell or High Water“and last year’s “Wind River.” Now, Sheridan and incoming director Stefano Sollima continue that legacy with “Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado.” While Blunt served as the audience surrogate in the first film, the sequel goes deeper into the drug war and Blunt is nowhere to be found. The film shifts the primary focus over to returning stars Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro, the latter of whom stole “Sicario” as mysterious assassin Alejandro Gillick. That perspective, according to Sheridan, means the film wi...

Women Not Competing With Men -Alajika

Image
Business magnate Folorunso Alakija has said that women are not in competition with men but should rather help each other to make a better society. Alakija said this on Thursday in her visit to the Nation Headquarters in Matori, Lagos in commemoration of the International Women’s Day celebrations. According to her, “A lot has been going on in the lives of women, especially the African woman. “Women have been brought up to bear children, however I believe there is more to women than just that.” She added that, “I will like to congratulate the women in this room and remind the men that without us they can’t exist. They are the head and the neck and together, we have to make it work.” However, Alakija dispel rumours that the International Women’s Day celebration was to wrestle rights from men. “We are not in competition with the men, Flourish Africa has come to encourage women to roll up their sleeves, balance the existence and propel and prosper women even in th...
